The aim of the project is to make information about Aberdeen's shipbuilding heritage accessible to the widest possible audience by creating this website.
Aberdeen Maritime Museum receives thousands of enquiries from all around the world about ships that were built in Aberdeen. Many enquiries are from family history researchers tracing the ships built, owned or sailed by their ancestors.
You can use this site to search for information about any of the nearly 3,000 recorded ships built in Aberdeen since 1811 and to see what objects are held at Aberdeen Maritime Museum.
We have gathered information about these ships from the shipbuilder’s yard lists; our library of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, from local resources such as the Press & Journal newspaper archives and from the memories of local people associated with the shipyards of Aberdeen.
We have digitized a large number of objects from Aberdeen Maritime Museum so that photographs, ships plans and other related material are also available to look at online.
This project is ongoing and with the help of volunteers from The Friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums more research is being carried out to add to this site.
You can search our database by entering the name of the ship you are looking for in the ‘Search’ box. This will bring up a list of ships with that name or ships associated with it in some way.
Click on the ‘Advanced Search’ link to look for ships by date of build, type of construction or keyword.
When browsing your results, you can click on a column header to sort the results by that column in ascending order. Clicking a column that is already sorted in ascending order will sort it in descending order.
Copies and prints of the images displayed on this website are available to purchase from the Museum using the Digital Print Order Form.
If you want to use any of these images for reproduction or for any commercial purpose please contact the Museum on the number below.
